Dr Harjinder Singh Dilgeer

Dr., Harjinder Singh Dilgeer, son of Mata Jagtar Kaur and Giani Gurbakhsh Singh, grandson of Sirdar Jaimal Singh, great-grandson of Sirdar Sunder Singh, great-great grandson of Bhai Rattan Singh, great-great-great grandson of Bhai Baisa Singh and great-great-great-great grandson of Bhai Preetam Singh, was born on October 22, 1947, at Jullundur. He passed his M.A. (English, Punjabi and Philosophy); M.Phil, LL.B., Adi Granth Acharya and Ph.D. degrees from Punjab University Chandigarh and Guru Nanak University Amritsar. Topic of his Ph.D. thesis was: Life, Time and Work of Master Tara Singh. movement.

D r Dilgeer began his career as a language teacher in private academies as well as in a couple of high schools. In 1971, he passed his M.A. in English and started teaching English language at different colleges in the Punjab. He worked as a Lecturer in English in colleges at Narur Panchhatt, Nakodar and Banga. He taught post-graduate classes at the Panjab University, Chandigarh from 1979 to 1982. In July 1983, he visited England and here, in October 1983, he joined as the Editor of the Punjab Times, London. In October 1984, he moved to Norway, where he was granted political asylum. During this period he engaged himself in research in Sikh history and wrote several books and research papers. In 1989 and 1990 he was invited to address several gatherings in Canada. In October 1990, when he visited Canada for the third time, he was requested by the Sikhs of Toronto to stay there for academic work. In October 1990, he established Guru Nanak Inastitute of Sikh Studies in Toronto. He left in Canada in March 1991. He spent the next two years in Norway. In March 1993, he was invited to address gatherings at New York USA. In 1993, he moved to Denmark and stayed there for four years. He was the International Director of Guru Nanak Institutes of Sikh Studies from 1983 to 1997. On January 12, 1998 he returned to his homeland (after an exile of fourteen and half years). During his tour he was offered Directorship of Sikh History Research Board. He resigned his job in March 1999 and returned to England to join as the editor of the Punjab Times. He spent the whole year (2000) in his homeland and completed his precious research work Guru De Sher. He came back to England in January 2001 where he is still living. At present he is the Editor of the Sikh Times, an English-Punjabi weekly published from Birmingham, England. Dr Dilgeer has been associated with journalism too. He launched a monthly Punjabi journal in the name of Ham Rahi in 1966 which could not last long. In 1977 he began a weekly Punjabi magazine Akali Reporter from Jullundur but had to close it down as he had joined as Senior Research fellow of the University Grants Commission, at the Panjab University Chandigarh, in 1979. In 1983, he joined Punjab Times London as its Editor. In 1991 he began publishing a research journal The Sikhs: Past & Present from Oslo, Norway. He continued editing it for two years. (Now it is published from Canada). Besides books and journalism, he has also contributed numerous articles to various reputed English and Punjabi journals of the world.

Dr. Dilgeer has written and edited more than 50 books. Most of these books have already been published. He began his “pen journey” with poetry and fiction. His first book was Bewafaiaan (1966), a book of romantic poems. It was followed by another poetry book Eskimo Smile (1972), a novelette Kamu Ronda Rahega (1973) and a book of stories Kamal Te Zohra (later published under the title of Yaaran Kahanian Te Ikk Novelette in 1977.In 1973, he edited a book 1960 Ton Baad Di Navin Punjabi Kavita

Unpublished works of Dr Dilgeer include: Guru Ghar De Lasani Sewadar (Punjabi), Sikh Nuktay (Punjabi), Sikh Twarikh (Punjabi), Japuji Sahib: Its Hemeneutics (English), Guru Nanak Sahib Ate Unhan De Gurdwarey (Punjabi and Hindi), Sikh Jathebandian (Punjabi), Dunian Nikki Jehi, a travelogue (Punjabi), Dilgeerian (poetry, Punjabi and Urdu), Sikh Kaun Hain? (Hindi), Sikh Kaun Han ? (Punjabi in Urdu script) etc. He is, nowadays, engaged in preparing another magnum opus Dilgeer Kosh, an encyclopedia (in Punjabi).

Dr Dilgeer has toured several countries of the world, including England, Canada, U.S.A., Germany, Holland, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Turkey, Pakistan etc. and addressed several conferences and congregations.

Dr. Kulwinder Singh Bajwa

Born on 16-7-1951, Dr. K.S. Bajwa did his graduation from B.U.C.

Batala with Hon’s in History and secured M.A. in History from the

Department of History, G.N.D.U., Amritsar. He was awarded Ph.D. by the

Guru Nanak Dev University on Historical Analysis of Early Nineteenth

Century European Travel Literature on the Punjab. He has 15 years of

research/teaching experience. He worked in the Department of History

(G.N.D.U.) as a Research Associate and Lecturer. During this period, he assisted in several projects, besides working on : The contribution of the Punjabis Towards India’s Struggle for Freedom. Since, 1996, he is heading the Sikh History Research Department Khalsa College, Amritsar.

His publications include more than three dozen articles, besides three books : (i) Akali Dal Sacha Sauda Bar (ed.) S.G.P.C. Amritsar 2000 (reprit 2003); (ii) A Brief History of Khalsa College, Amritsar , SHRD, Khalsa College, 2003; (iii) Mehma Parkash (Vartak) (ed.). Singh Brothers, Amritsar 2004. He has been assisting in several research projects; for instance he contributed towards preparation of a dossier for Harmandar Sahib – World Heritage Site; He is a member of Nanakshahi Calendar Nirnye Committee , and also contributed towards Khalsa Heritage Museum, Anandpur Sahib. Currently, he is working on the project; Khalsa College Amritsar : Contribution to the Nation with Special reference to Sikh

Dr Bhagat Singh Late Dr. Bhagat Singh, former professor of History, Punjabi University Patiala. He was the author of several books and articles on Sikhism.

Sardar Daljeet Singh(1911 – 1994)

Daljeet Singh was born to Mata Nihal Kaur on the 30th Nov. 1911 in village Kang in Amritsar Distt. His father’s name was Sr. Gurbaksh Singh. Daljeet Singh did his B.Sc. (Hons.) in Botany in 1930. A. D. from Khalsa College, Amritsar, which was attached with the Punjab University, Lahore at that time. He did his L. L. B. from P. U., Lahore in 1935 A. D. He joined the Indian Administrative Services and served on various posts as Deputy Commissioner, Excise-Taxation Commissioner, Joint Secretary, Finance Secretary, U. T. and finally retired as Education Secretary of Punjab in 1969 A. D. At the age of 28, he had already started his study of various religious texts including the Vedas. While working in the administrative services, he was involved with the framing of the Charter of the Punjabi and the Guru Nanak Dev Universities.

He came into his own after his retirement whereafter he devoted his full time and energy to the study of Sikhism and World religions.His involvement in Sikh affairs as a critical and intellectual observer has led to many concrete courses of action. He is responsible for the establishment of The Council of Sikh Affairs, The Institute of Sikh Studies.

Within the parameters of these two organisations, S. Daljeet Singh has rendered much valuable work and tackled long pending issues of general Punjabi interest like the comparable treatise on the issue of the Punjab river waters – which is a landmark and a point of reference-and issues of particular Sikh interest like the authorship of the Dasam Granth and thus brought to the fore problems, which have been treated with scant respect. His notable books are – Sikhism – Comparative Study of its Theology and Mysticism -1979. – The Sikh Ideology -1985 – Essentials of Sikhism – Essays on the Kartarpuri Bir

At the time of his death, (October 8,1994), S. Daljeet Singh was writing a book – Sikhism and Civilization (a study of Sikhism and Comparative religions). This significant work places Sikhism on par with world religion – an un-paralleled job. It has unfortunately been left in an incomplete state.

His books possess a rich complexity. They are the result of deep research into the mystical aspect of human thought. His deep and critical study of the various religions and mystical streams of thought lend to his writings a vastness, thoroughness and a completeness not to be found elsewhere. He had the ability to trace rare complexities of world religions and the various mystical movements and translate them in relation to Sikhism. In short, Sardar Daljeet Singh will live for ever in the hearts of his people for his unique selfless services rendered by him to them.

Dr Gobind Singh Mansukhani

Late Dr Gobind Singh Mansukhani was an educationist, former Principal, Khalsa College Bombay & Jullundhur. He was a member of UGC. He wrote seventeen books on Sikhism.

Sardar Iqbal Singh Sara

Late Sr. Iqbal Singh Sara was a senior Barrister-at-Law in Vancouver, BC. He is the author of several articles on Sikh religion and history. He was also the President of the Akaal Federation Vancouver.

Sardar Jagjit Singh(1904 – 1997)

Sardar Jagjit Singh was a well-known name among the prominent Sikh Scholars of the twentieth century. He was born to Sardami Ram Kaur on 12th of February 1904 at village Dhotian in district Amritsar. His father’s name was Sardar Arjan Singh.

Jagjit Singh spent his early childhood in his native village Dhotian. He received his further education at Tam Taran and Khalsa College, Amritsar, where he did his B.Sc. in 1925 A.D. He completed his M.Sc in Chemistry in 1927 A.D. from Punjab University, Lahore. He also studied at the Banglore Institute of Chemistry.

After having received his higher education, he joined the profession of teaching. He was a Lecturer in Chemistry at Sikh National College Lahore around 1938-39 A.D. Being an active participant, S. Jagjit Singh contributed in the freedom struggle. He rendered a remarkable service to the victims of the partition paying frequent visits to the various villages helping people to escape to safety. After the partition, S. Jagjit Singh took research work in his hand. He had to give up teaching work to make a mark in the field of his research work. He wrote the most concise account of the Ghaddhar party. It was published in 1956 from Tam Taran.

Though History and Theology were not S. Jagjit Singh’s disciplines, he took them up in reaction to W.H.McLeod’s ‘Evolution of the Sikh Community’, in which he (Macleod) had reduced the Sikh Movement merely a Jat Movement. His co-companion in this front was S. Daljeet Singh. S. Jagjit Singh worked hard and produced a number of books, which are the remarkable writings of a scholar mind and brain. While in Ghaziabad he wrote ‘The Sikh Revolution’ which was published there in 1981 A.D. Its punjabi version was published titled “Sikh Inklaab” in 1982 A.D. He published ‘Perspectives of Sikh Studies’ in 1985.

After his move to Chandigarh, S Jagjit Singh wrote and Published three worthwhile books titled as:

Zaat Paat Te Sikh – 1986 (Pbi.) In the Caravan of Revolutions – 1988 Inklaabi Lehran De Parsang Wich Sikh Lehar – 1992. (Pbi.) S. Jagjit Singh possessed a remarkably tidy and clear intellect. His scientific background has its impact on his mentality and thus on his writings. Thoughtfulness, logic, charity and earnestness for facts, reality and truth are the salient features of his writings. Thus his writings have made their own sort of impact over the minds of his readers. They are likely to gain more and more popularity with the passage of time. He was honored by SGPC for his work on Sikhism on April 9, 1995.

It is also to note that S. Jagjit Singh’s grand father remained greatly involved in the Sikh Wars. S. Jagjit Singh was honored for his deep and sincere services the Bhai Gurdas Award in 1993 A.D. In short, he may be called a real genius.

Dr Trilochan Singh

Late Dr Trilochan Singh was a well known researcher on several aspects of Sikhism. He published twenty books and two hundred research papers to his credit. His last book was “Ernest Trumpp and W.H. McLeod As Scholars of Sikh History Religion and Culture”

After the partition of India in 1947 he worked for one year in Delhi as part-time lecturer in Punjabi in Ramjas College,Hindu College and Indraprastha College . For about two years he worked as editor of Punjabi Publications in the Panjab University at Shimla. In 1950 he joined as Head of the Post-Graduate Deptt. of Punjabi in Govt . Mahendra College,Patiala from where he shifted to Govt . College,Ludhiana in the same capacity . He was promoted as Principal of Govt. Brijindra College,Faridkot and later of Govt . College,Ludhiana . In 1972 he was invited by Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar to work as Founder Professor and Head of Deptt . of Guru Nanak Studies in which capacity he worked there till 1980 .

Pritpal Singh Bindra

Pritpal, a postgraduate of Punjab University, moved to England in 1960 after teaching in a few schools in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. There he taught in Secondary Technical School, Willsdon, London, N.W.10 for two years, 1961-63, and, then, he went into his own business of Motor and Commercial Insurance. He had a long desire to take up early retirement and fulfill his ambition of reading and writing and sold his business in 1983.
He has been studying Sikh Scripture, Religion and Polity. While writing articles for many weeklies and monthlies in Canada and India (including The Sikh Review, Calcutta, Abstracts of Sikh Studies, Chandigarh etc.) he was mainly busy in compiling a conceptual reference book on Guru Granth Sahib. The book, Thus Sayeth Gurbani, has been published by Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle, Ludhiana. It contains more than 10,000 quotations spread over 500 pages. In 1998 he was awarded the prestigious Akali Phoola Singh Book Award by Academy of Sikh Religion and Culture, Patiala.

He has translated Chritro Pakhyaan (Triya Chariter) of Dasam Granth into English and it has been published by Chatar Singh Jiwan Singh, Amritsar.

He has also rendered into English the Hikayaat (Stories in Persian) from Dasam Granth and the book is under print and is to be published by Sikh Social and Educational Society, Toronto, Canada.
The translation into English of all the poetical works of Bhai Nand Goya is his most ambitious and prestigious endeavour. This book is being published The Institute of Sikh Studies, Chandigarh and will be released shortly.

He has just completed the English version of Guru Kian Saakhian written by Bhai Swaroop Singh Kaushish in 1790 CE. It is gone into press with an extensive Introduction and Annotations by S. Pal Singh Purewal (the author of Nanak Shahi Calendar

Currently he is busy in giving to the Sikh Jagat the English translation of 675 Kabits of Bhai Gurdas.
In his free time Pritpal writes short stories, and a collection of 16 stories was published by New Book Co., Jalandhar in 1997. Its second edition with 20 stories has been published in 2001 by Asia Vision, Ludhiana Once a good friend of his commented, “Considering all his varied works, one wonders how contrasting is his attitude towards life, on one hand, going through his writings on Sikhism, one presumes him to be an epitome of religiosity but after reading his fictions one learns he is a great hero of romance like the prominent Urdu-writer, Sadat Hassan Mintoo.”

Pal Singh Purewal

BSc. B.T. worked as Mathematics and Science teacher in Punjab before moving to the United Kingdom in 1965 CE. There, in 1966, he joined Texas Instruments Ltd. as Senior Engineering Technician. He rose to the position of Senior Engineer and received special recognition for “extra -ordinary contribution” to the company for his work on ‘Whisker Inhibited Tin Plating’. This process he installed in TI San Salvador, El Salvador, Central America. He received his MIMF (Membership of the Institute of Metal Finishing) while working for TI. He traveled to Germany and the USA on company business. He emigrated to Canada from U.K in 1974, and found employment in Edmonton, in computing field. Very rapidly he moved up the ladder and was appointed as Programmer Analyst.

In 1978 he joined Miller Office Group as Supervisor Data Processing and in 1979 he was promoted to the position of Data Processing Manager. He was also on the Board of Directors of the company.

During his college career he was a top sportsman and was a member of the Punjab University and the Punjab State Basketball teams. In 1961 he represented Punjab in the game of chess also. He was also on the Bedfordshire Chess Team in England . (In both these sports, probably, he was the first Sikh to be on the State teams.)
For many years he worked on his ‘500 years Jantri’, a book of comparative Indian calendars with Common Era calendar. It was published in 1994 by the Punjab School Education Board. This 550-page book is a very useful tool for historians to check and convert the dates in important Indian calendars from 1469 CE onwards.

More recently, he was involved in designing the Nanakshahi calendar for the Sikh Nation, making it conform to the length of the tropical year, and fixing the Gurpurbs and the Sikh festival dates in this calendar. This calendar was approved from Sri Akal Takht Sahib, and implemented by the SGPC with effect from Vaisakhi last year and has been adopted by the vast majority of the Gurdwaras the world over. For his work on the Nanakshahi calendar he was awarded Honorary Doctorate by the World Sikh University, UK.
He was president of the Sikh Society of Alberta during 1983-84. Currently he is the President of the Millwoods Cultural Society of Retired and Semi-Retired, Edmonton. This society has a membership of about 350 and it has its own premises.

Last year he was awarded Queen’s Golden Jubilee medal for his voluntary work in the community for almost three decades, and was also recognized in the Alberta Legislature by the Minister of Community Development Hon’ble Gene Zwozdesky.
